Tajikistan, Bangladesh Discuss Prospects for Strengthening Interparliamentary Cooperation

Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: Chairman of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Assembly of Representatives) of the Majlisi Oli (Supreme Assembly) of Tajikistan Fayzali Idizoda held a meeting with Shahidul Islam, head of the delegation of the Parliament of Bangladesh, in Dushanbe on Thursday.

The meeting focused on the development of relations between Tajikistan and Bangladesh, with particular attention given to cooperation in the social and cultural spheres.

The sides also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between state institutions of the two countries, including their parliaments, within the framework of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), of which Tajikistan and Bangladesh are members.

The participants noted that parliaments, as supreme representative and legislative bodies, can serve as important platforms for dialogue, exchange of experience, and strengthening trust and mutual understanding between states.

It was noted that, with a view to promoting interparliamentary relations and parliamentary diplomacy, the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of Tajikistan has established friendship and cooperation groups with more than 70 parliaments around the world.

In this context, the establishment of a parliamentary friendship group between the Majlisi Namoyandagon of Tajikistan and the Parliament of Bangladesh was described as an important avenue for strengthening bilateral interparliamentary cooperation.

Such a friendship and cooperation group could facilitate reciprocal meetings and dialogue, exchanges of legislative experience, mutual parliamentary visits, stronger ties between relevant parliamentary committees, and discussions on issues of mutual interest.

According to the information presented at the meeting, trade turnover between Tajikistan and Bangladesh amounted to $106 million in 2025.

Fayzali Idizoda expressed support for expanding cooperation between higher education institutions of Tajikistan and Bangladesh, including exchanges of students, teachers, scholars and researchers, as well as the implementation of joint scientific and educational programmes.

He also underscored the importance of coordinating the positions of the two countries’ parliaments on issues related to sustainable development, climate change, the rational use of water resources, environmental protection and other global challenges.

The meeting was described as an important step towards further strengthening friendship and cooperation between the parliaments of Tajikistan and Bangladesh.
