Tajikistan Launches Digital Platform to Preserve Cultural Heritage and Historic Monuments

Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: Tajikistan has launched a major digital initiative aimed at preserving, documenting, and promoting the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage as part of a broader national strategy to advance the digital economy and innovation sector.
The initiative was highlighted during a conference organized by the Agency for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage, which focused on ongoing efforts to digitize the nation’s cultural assets, according to the National Information Agency of Tajikistan (NIAT) Khovar.
The project is being implemented under a presidential decree that designates 2025–2030 as the “Years of Development of the Digital Economy and Innovation,” reflecting the government’s commitment to integrating digital technologies across key sectors.
Officials announced that a specialized digital platform has been established on the agency’s website, featuring seven sections dedicated to tangible and intangible cultural heritage, archaeological discoveries, legal documents, cultural classifications, and a digital library. The platform represents Tajikistan’s first national online register of historical and cultural monuments.
Speaking at the conference, Agency Director Sherali Khojazoda said the initiative is designed to safeguard the country’s cultural heritage while ensuring access for future generations. He noted that the integration of artificial intelligence technologies will enhance the monitoring, documentation, and restoration of historical sites and monuments.
The first phase of the project includes the digitization of several prominent heritage sites, including the ancient city of Sarazm, Kholbuk Fortress, the Mausoleum of Mir Sayid Ali Hamadani, and monuments of ancient Khuttal. These sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 2025.
According to officials, the initiative will ultimately lead to the creation of a unified national database accessible through an online portal, providing researchers, students, and the general public with comprehensive information on the country’s cultural and historical assets.
The project forms part of Tajikistan’s wider digital transformation agenda, with authorities emphasizing that modern technologies are essential for protecting cultural heritage from environmental threats, improving conservation efforts, and expanding global access to the country’s historical treasures.
