Tajikistan Opens New National Theatre in Dushanbe Ahead of Independence Anniversary

Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: President of Tajikistan and Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon, together with Chairman of the National Assembly of Tajikistan and Mayor of Dushanbe Rustam Emomali, officially inaugurated the country’s new National Theatre in Dushanbe on August 24.

The opening of the grand cultural complex was described as a significant event in the country’s cultural life. Built at the initiative of President Rahmon, the National Theatre is being presented as a major gift to the people of Tajikistan and the country’s cultural and artistic community ahead of the 35th anniversary of state independence.

Following the inauguration, President Rahmon and Rustam Emomali made the first entries in the honorary visitors’ book, expressing their good wishes for the new cultural institution.

Located in the heart of Dushanbe near the National Museum and the State Flag Park, the National Theatre combines contemporary architecture with traditional Tajik artistic elements. Its design and decoration incorporate national motifs, ornaments and artistic features reflecting the country’s historical and cultural heritage.

The construction of the theatre began on March 17, 2015, when President Rahmon ceremonially laid the foundation stone and officially launched the project. Over the following 11 years, architects, engineers, builders, designers and skilled craftsmen worked on the construction and decoration of the complex.

The National Theatre consists of seven floors, including two underground and five above-ground levels, and reaches a height of 35 meters. Three hectares of land were allocated for the project.

The complex includes three principal halls and numerous auxiliary facilities. The main auditorium has a capacity of 2,500 spectators and features a large stage and a dedicated orchestra area, enabling the venue to host theatrical performances, operas, ballets, symphonic concerts and other major cultural events.

The main hall is 18 meters high and has been designed in accordance with modern requirements for stage productions. Another hall accommodates 1,000 spectators, while a conference hall has seating for 1,115 people.

The theatre also contains rehearsal rooms for singers and choirs, costume and footwear workshops, lighting facilities, audio and video recording studios, administrative offices, a theatre museum, exhibition areas, reception rooms and conference facilities.

Modern working conditions have been created for artists and theatre employees, with the complex designed to support the full creative process, from rehearsals and production to staging and performance.

The building is equipped with 17 passenger and freight elevators and six escalators. A hotel with 136 beds has also been provided for guests and performers, while the two underground floors include parking facilities for 250 vehicles as well as technical and auxiliary rooms.

The National Theatre has been equipped with modern heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and other engineering systems, making it a comprehensive cultural and artistic complex.

The project combines modern technology with elements of Tajik national culture. Interior and exterior decorations feature traditional patterns and motifs inspired by the history and civilization of the Tajik people, creating a visual connection between the country’s ancient heritage and contemporary architectural achievements.

The opening of the theatre underscores the government’s stated emphasis on developing culture and the arts and providing improved facilities for cultural institutions and artists.

The National Theatre is expected to host major theatrical productions, festivals, opera and ballet performances, symphonic concerts, conferences and international cultural events. It is also expected to provide new opportunities for young artists and contribute to the promotion of Tajik culture on the international stage.

The inauguration comes as Tajikistan prepares to mark the 35th anniversary of state independence, with the new theatre positioned as one of the country’s major cultural landmarks.

With its large performance spaces, modern technical infrastructure and distinctive national architectural design, the National Theatre is set to become an important venue for preserving cultural heritage, supporting artistic creativity and presenting Tajik history, literature and traditions to audiences in Tajikistan and abroad.
