Tô Lâm Arrives in New York to Attend 81st UN General Assembly High-Level Debate
New York, The Gulf Observer: General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President Tô Lâm, accompanied by a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, has arrived in New York to participate in the High-Level General Debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) and conduct a series of bilateral engagements in the United States.
Tô Lâm and the delegation arrived in New York on September 20 local time and were welcomed at John F. Kennedy International Airport by Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Nguyễn Quốc Dũng, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations Đỗ Hùng Việt, and officials from the Vietnamese Embassy and Permanent Mission to the UN.
His participation in the UNGA 81 high-level debate comes as Vietnam and the United Nations prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of their relations. According to Vietnam News, the visit underscores Vietnam’s support for the central role of the United Nations in multilateral cooperation and its commitment to respect for international law.
During his participation, Tô Lâm is expected to share Vietnam’s experience gained through four decades of the Đổi Mới (Renewal) process and put forward initiatives aimed at addressing common global challenges, including climate change, sustainable development and the governance of emerging core technologies.
The Vietnamese delegation is also scheduled to participate in high-level discussions covering issues such as the right to development, climate change and a just transition, sea-level rise, pandemic prevention and preparedness, and nuclear disarmament. These discussions are expected to provide an opportunity for UN member states to exchange views and explore solutions to challenges affecting peace, security and sustainable development.
Tô Lâm’s bilateral activities in the United States are also expected to contribute to implementing understandings reached by the senior leaders of Vietnam and the United States and to further promote the two countries’ Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The engagements will focus on strategic and long-term issues, while seeking to deepen mutual understanding and cooperation between the two countries.
The high-level general debate of the 81st UN General Assembly is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 26 and conclude on September 28 at UN Headquarters in New York. The theme of this year’s General Debate is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
