UAE Cyber Security Council Thwarts Major Ransomware Attacks, Warns of Growing AI-Driven Threats

Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: The UAE Cyber Security Council announced the successful prevention of ransomware attacks targeting critical sectors across public and private entities. The malicious attempts sought to breach data and lock digital systems, highlighting the growing sophistication of cyber threats.
Emergency cybersecurity systems, in collaboration with relevant authorities, detected and preemptively countered approximately 200,000 cyberattacks daily. The Council also identified the origins of these attacks and addressed them using advanced protection frameworks and robust cybersecurity policies.
Rise of AI-Driven Cyber Threats
Recent breach attempts revealed the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including deepfake technologies, social engineering tactics, and enhanced malware such as ransomware. The Council noted that AI-driven cyberattacks pose a significant emerging challenge to digital infrastructure.
Traditional methods such as phishing and social engineering persist, but the Council anticipates a surge in sophisticated, AI-powered attacks. These emerging threats are expected to be more complex and difficult to detect without advanced cybersecurity technologies.
Call for Vigilance and Compliance
Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the Cyber Security Council, reaffirmed the commitment of national task forces to fortifying the UAE’s digital infrastructure. He stated:
“The UAE’s advanced digital infrastructure is well-equipped to detect and mitigate cyber threats with high efficiency and speed. We remain committed to protecting critical infrastructure in line with global best practices.”
Dr. Al Kuwaiti urged public and private entities, as well as individuals, to remain vigilant. He warned against phishing attempts and fraudulent messages, advising caution when sharing personal information and urging the use of secure communication channels.
The Council also highlighted the increasing availability of sophisticated AI-powered tools to criminal organisations and terrorist groups, which could lead to precision-targeted attacks against vulnerable entities.
Global Impact of Ransomware Attacks
Ransomware, a type of malware that encrypts and locks electronic data until a ransom is paid, remains a significant global challenge. Such attacks have severe financial implications, costing institutions hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
The UAE Cyber Security Council emphasized the importance of adhering to cybersecurity standards and safeguarding personal data to prevent falling victim to cyberattacks. The Council’s proactive measures continue to enhance the nation’s resilience against the evolving landscape of cyber threats.
