Wang Yi Addresses UN Human Rights Council, Advocates for Global Cooperation on Human Rights
Beijing, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi participated in the high-level segment of the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council via video on Monday. Emphasizing the need for collective efforts, Wang urged all parties to prioritize the protection of people’s right to survival and development, particularly in the face of increasing global turbulence, crises, and conflicts.
As a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Wang Yi highlighted the growing challenges in global human rights governance. He underscored the pressing issues, citing the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict that has resulted in significant civilian casualties and displacements.
Wang called upon the international community to protect the human rights of all ethnic groups and individuals impartially, emphasizing the importance of a fair, equal, and effective approach. He urged all parties to prioritize people’s interests and uphold the fundamental goals of the human rights cause, particularly focusing on the right to survival and development.
“We must uphold fairness and justice, stand against attempts to use human rights as a pretext for interference in other countries’ internal affairs or to hinder their development,” Wang declared. He firmly opposed acts of hegemonism, power politics, and the application of double standards.
Wang Yi urged respect for countries’ rights to independently choose their paths to human rights development, emphasizing that imposing one’s values or development models on others is counterproductive. He called for a collaborative approach based on dialogue and mutual learning, rejecting the creation of blocs and alignment against those with differing views.
Highlighting China’s active role in global human rights governance, Wang emphasized the nation’s contributions to international conventions and declarations on human rights. China, as a responsible major country, is actively working towards delivering the benefits of modernization to its population in a substantive and equitable manner. Wang affirmed China’s commitment to championing common human values and collaborating with all sides to contribute to the healthy development of the global human rights cause.
In conclusion, Wang Yi advocated for the fair and objective operation of UN human rights bodies, emphasizing a non-selective and non-politicized approach that equally considers economic, social, cultural, civil, and political rights. Multilateral human rights bodies, he asserted, should serve as platforms for constructive engagement and cooperation rather than arenas for political confrontation.
