Vietnamese Ambassador Urges Global Cooperation on Climate at UN Council

Geneva, The Gulf Observer: Ambassador Mai Phan Dũng, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), World Trade Organisation, and other international organisations, underscored the critical importance of international cooperation in addressing climate change and ensuring no one is left behind. His remarks were delivered during a dialogue on the UN Secretary-General’s report on human rights and climate change at the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

Ambassador Dũng emphasised that climate change has severely impacted the enjoyment of basic human rights. Citing recent extreme weather events, including Typhoon Yagi, which affected the Philippines, China, and Vietnam, as well as devastating floods in Bangladesh, he highlighted the widespread damage these disasters cause, from human casualties and displacement to infrastructure destruction, hampering long-term economic development.

He also stressed that vulnerable groups, particularly women, children, and people in developing countries, bear the brunt of these impacts. The ambassador called for equal, inclusive solutions, urging the international community to prioritise support for the hardest-hit populations to help them build resilience against future climate challenges.

Ambassador Dũng further called for increased financial resources and the implementation of human rights-based measures to mitigate climate-related losses and ensure sustainable recovery.

The 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council, spanning five weeks, includes various programmes, including six discussions focused on economic, social, and cultural rights.
