BHOS Commemorates 35th Anniversary of January 20 Tragedy

Baku, The Gulf Observer: The Baku Higher Oil School (BHOS) of SOCAR hosted a solemn event on January 20 to mark the 35th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy, honoring the memory of the Shehids (martyrs) who lost their lives during the brutal crackdown. Participants of the event paid their respects with a minute of silence in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives for Azerbaijan’s freedom and independence.

Vice-Rector for General Affairs, Babek Mammadov, delivered a speech highlighting the significance of the January 20 tragedy in the nation’s history. He described it as a powerful symbol of the heroism and national determination displayed by the Azerbaijani people in their quest for liberty, emphasizing that the tragic events are forever engraved in the golden annals of Azerbaijan’s struggle for independence.

Zarifa Agaverdiyeva, wife of Shehid Aslan Agaverdiyev, also spoke at the event, reflecting on the deep emotional and national impact of the January 20 events. She spoke movingly of the selflessness of the Shehids, whose ultimate sacrifice laid the groundwork for Azerbaijan’s ideals of freedom and sovereignty.

Associate Professor Altay Ismayilov, Head of the Business Administration Department at BHOS, also delivered remarks, underscoring that the events of January 20 are a testament to the national will and unity of the Azerbaijani people. He emphasized the importance of the day in nurturing patriotism and national pride among the younger generation.

The commemorative event concluded with the screening of the documentary “The Next Station is 20 January,” further reflecting on the historical and emotional significance of the day in the hearts of the Azerbaijani people.
