Myanmar Promotes Myanma Thanaka for UNESCO Recognition and Establishes “Myanma Thanaka Day”

Nay Pyi Taw, The Gulf Observer: A campaign advocating for Myanma Thanaka to be inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, along with the observance of “Myanma Thanaka Day” on 12 February, was held yesterday at the National Library in Nay Pyi Taw.
The event was attended by Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture Daw Nu Mra Zan, along with departmental officials, teachers, and students from Nyaungpingyisu Post-Primary School and Honey Tree Private School.
As part of the campaign, the library presented a historical and cultural overview of Myanma Thanaka, showcasing its significance through video clips, book displays, and an online database. Students also participated by reciting poems dedicated to Thanaka and wearing the traditional cosmetic paste.
In conjunction with this initiative, national museums, cultural museums, and libraries across Myanmar under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture have been encouraged to organize “Thanaka Week” or “Thanaka Month” throughout February, further promoting the rich heritage and benefits of Myanma Thanaka.
This campaign reflects Myanmar’s commitment to preserving and globally recognizing Thanaka as an integral part of its cultural identity.
