Serdar Berdimuhamedov Leads Mass Bicycle Ride in Ashgabat to Mark World Bicycle Day

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov participated in a mass bicycle ride in Ashgabat on Tuesday to commemorate World Bicycle Day, as reported by Turkmenistan’s state news agency. The event underscored the country’s ongoing commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and sustainable urban mobility.
The bicycle ride brought together a wide range of participants, including the Speaker of the Mejlis, members of the Cabinet of Ministers, senior representatives of military and law enforcement bodies, officials from various ministries and sectoral administrations, representatives of the capital city’s government, heads of public organizations, university administrators, and leaders of the national and international media. Also in attendance were heads of foreign diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in Turkmenistan, along with national cycling team members, students, and civil society representatives.
During the ride, President Berdimuhamedov issued a directive to Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers for Agriculture, Tangryguly Atahalyev, to maintain close oversight of the implementation of the National Forestry Program. This long-term initiative is central to improving Turkmenistan’s environmental sustainability.
Baymyrat Annamammedov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers responsible for Ashgabat’s development, reported to the president on ongoing efforts to enhance the capital’s infrastructure. In response, President Berdimuhamedov emphasized the strategic importance of fulfilling the tasks outlined in Ashgabat’s development concept, including the modernization of urban systems, the assurance of environmental well-being, and the creation of high-quality living conditions for citizens. He called for consistent supervision and effective execution of these goals.
Turkmenistan was the driving force behind the establishment of World Bicycle Day. On the country’s initiative, the United Nations General Assembly, at its 76th session and 61st plenary meeting, unanimously adopted the resolution titled “Promoting Cycling to Achieve Sustainable Development and Integrate Cycling into Sustainable Transport Systems.” Celebrated globally on June 3, the day serves as a platform to raise awareness of the social, economic, and environmental benefits of cycling.
The bicycle ride in Ashgabat reflects Turkmenistan’s broader vision of encouraging eco-friendly transport and fostering a healthier society through active public engagement.
