Belgium Introduces New Energy Labels for Smartphones, Tablets, and Tumble Dryers to Promote Sustainability

Brussels, The Gulf Observer: A new energy labeling system aimed at enhancing consumer awareness of product durability and repairability will be rolled out across the European Union, starting this month. The initiative, part of the EU’s broader push for sustainable consumption, was officially announced by Belgium’s Ministry of Economy on Thursday.
From June 20, smartphones and tablets will display the new energy labels, followed by tumble dryers from July 1. This update replaces the older labeling format (A+, A++, A+++) with a simplified A to G scale, where A indicates the most energy-efficient and durable products, and G the least.
Beyond energy efficiency, the new label introduces comprehensive consumer information, including:
- Battery life per charge
- Number of charging cycles before performance degradation
- Repairability score
- Resistance to falls, dust, and water
Each label will also include a QR code linking to the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL). There, consumers can access detailed digital sheets listing the operating system, accessory compatibility, and manufacturer’s update policies.
These changes follow similar updates made for televisions, washing machines, and refrigerators, and are part of the EU’s strategy to reduce electronic waste and encourage responsible purchasing decisions.
Authorities expect the labeling reform to empower consumers, prolong device lifespans, and boost demand for more sustainable products.
