Manila, The Gulf Observer: Patrick Gregorio, the newly appointed Chair of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), has expressed deep gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for entrusting him with the leadership role, promising to uphold the President’s confidence with effective and inspiring stewardship.

In a statement released early Sunday, Gregorio, who also currently serves as President of the Philippine Rowing Association, said:

“It is my honor and privilege to serve as the chair of the Philippine Sports Commission. I am grateful for the President’s trust and will do right by it.”

Citing recent triumphs by Filipino athletes on the world stage—Hidilyn Diaz’s Olympic weightlifting gold in Tokyo 2021, Carlos Yulo’s double gymnastics gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and Alex Eala’s runner-up finish at the Lexus Eastbourne Open in England—Gregorio said he draws inspiration from these accomplishments and aspires to further elevate Philippine sports.

“Let my leadership inspire as I have been inspired by the sheer potential in Philippine sports — to build and to strengthen this proud nation,” Gregorio added. “Karangalan ko ang magsilbi sa bayan at sa mga atleta ng bayan.”

Gregorio replaces Dickie Bachmann, also a former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) board member and professional player. The appointment was confirmed on Saturday by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.

While an official start date has not yet been announced, Gregorio—who also served as PBA board chair in 2014—is expected to bring seasoned leadership and a passion for national sports development to the role.

Stakeholders in Philippine sports have welcomed the appointment, hopeful that Gregorio’s vision and experience will enhance the PSC’s support systems for athletes and foster new milestones in international competition.
