New York, The Gulf Observer: Former President of the European Council Charles Michel reflected on the progress achieved in fostering dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia, underlining the importance of continued efforts to consolidate peace, mutual sovereignty, and regional stability.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Michel recalled the early challenges of establishing communication between the two countries’ leadership. “I remember a few years ago, it was extremely difficult for the leadership in Azerbaijan and in Armenia to have a channel of communication and to have some space to make possible first to understand each other much better. And I’ve tried to do my best with this so-called Brussels format,” he said.

Michel emphasized that despite diverging views, both sides had demonstrated a willingness to progress toward peace. “Sometimes it was very difficult because there were diverging views, but I felt that there was a wish and even a will to make progress and to make possible some steps towards a peace agreement. And I’m very happy that those steps are made. I know that’s still difficult. There are still some challenges. I know that it’s important to work to make sure that we consolidate the territorial integrity, the recognition of the mutual sovereignty,” he noted.

The former European Council President highlighted the significance of economic cooperation and connectivity in supporting long-term stability. “In the mid-term, in the long-term, I think that the more there will be economic projects, the more there will be investments, and for that, connectivity will play a fundamental role. The more it will consolidate more predictability, and I hope more trust in that vision,” Michel explained.

He expressed satisfaction with the opportunities provided to facilitate direct talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan and voiced hope that future efforts would build upon these achievements.

Michel also underlined that the opening of the Zangezur Corridor would be a key step in strengthening stability and implementing a peace agreement between the two countries. He added that the Corridor would not only improve relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia but also enhance connectivity between the European Union, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.
