Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Morocco has been elected to the Council of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) during the organization’s 34th General Assembly, held in Rome from December 10 to 12.

The Kingdom was elected to the governing body of the UNESCO-affiliated organization through Rabiaa El Harrak, an architect at the Cultural Heritage Directorate of Morocco’s Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication. Her mandate on the ICCROM Council will span four years.

Morocco’s election reflects international recognition of the country’s expertise and longstanding experience in the protection and restoration of cultural heritage, as well as its growing leadership role within international cultural organizations.

Morocco participated in the 34th General Assembly with a delegation led by Youssef Balla, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the United Nations agencies in Rome. The assembly was held under the theme “Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development.”

During the session, participants discussed proposed amendments to ICCROM’s foundational texts, alongside financial matters, program implementation, and a series of reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and good governance within the organization.

Headquartered in Rome, ICCROM provides support to its member states through training programs, technical assistance, applied research, and capacity-building initiatives focused on the preservation of tangible cultural heritage, including both movable and immovable assets.

Morocco has been a member of ICCROM since 1958 and has actively contributed to its programs and initiatives over the decades, underscoring the Kingdom’s sustained commitment to safeguarding historic sites, cities, and the rich diversity of its national cultural heritage.
