Indonesia to Modernize Railway Stations Nationwide to Enhance Public Transport

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Prabowo Subianto has directed the modernization of all railway stations across Indonesia starting this year, as part of a broader effort to improve the quality, comfort, and accessibility of public transportation, a senior official said.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya announced the initiative while inspecting Pasar Senen Railway Station in Jakarta on Tuesday, stating that the president aims to transform stations into cleaner, more comfortable, and passenger-friendly facilities.

“The President wants all stations to be modernized and made more comfortable,” Wijaya said, emphasizing that the government’s focus extends beyond upgrading trains to include significant improvements in station infrastructure.

According to Wijaya, the modernization program will address key aspects such as cleanliness, accessibility, and overall passenger experience. He added that implementation is set to begin as soon as possible, with work commencing this year.

In parallel with station upgrades, the government is also enhancing train services, particularly in the economy class segment, to provide more affordable and comfortable travel options.

Wijaya noted that ticket prices for the Jakarta–Yogyakarta route have dropped significantly—from approximately Rp225,000–Rp250,000 to around Rp135,000–Rp175,000—while onboard facilities have been upgraded. Improvements include better air conditioning, cleaner restrooms, and more ergonomic seating arrangements.

“The prices have decreased, while the facilities have improved. The air conditioning functions properly, the toilets are clean, and the seating layout is more comfortable,” he said.

The government plans to gradually expand the affordable economy train programme by upgrading carriage quality and extending services to regions beyond Java, with the aim of ensuring more equitable access to reliable rail transport nationwide.

Wijaya also expressed confidence that this year’s Eid al-Fitr homecoming travel period will proceed more smoothly than in previous years, citing strong coordination among ministries, agencies, state-owned railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia, and other transportation stakeholders.

“All relevant institutions have worked well. This year must be even better,” he added.
