Indonesia Accelerates EV Ecosystem Development to Support Clean Energy Transition

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia is stepping up efforts to accelerate the development of its electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in response to rising energy consumption, particularly from fossil fuels, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said.
Speaking in an official statement released on Friday, the minister emphasized that the government is adopting an integrated approach to strengthen the EV industry, expand supporting infrastructure, and introduce incentives aimed at boosting EV adoption while enhancing national energy self-sufficiency.
He noted that the initiative forms part of Indonesia’s broader strategy to transition toward clean and renewable energy. “We are accelerating the adoption of clean and renewable energy, including through electrification in the transport sector,” Bahlil said after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto at the inauguration of an electric commercial vehicle assembly plant in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday.
According to the minister, the government is focused on building a comprehensive EV ecosystem to ensure effective and widespread implementation. He added that various facilities and incentive mechanisms are being prepared to fast-track progress in line with national targets.
At the same event, President Prabowo underscored the importance of achieving self-sufficiency in both food and energy, describing them as essential pillars of national independence. He stressed that the transition to clean energy is a strategic necessity that can no longer be delayed.
“One of these steps is the shift to electricity, so that we no longer rely heavily on fossil fuels and carbon,” the president said.
Prabowo further highlighted that energy, alongside food security, remains a critical sector for ensuring long-term sustainability. He reaffirmed that Indonesia must pursue self-reliance to safeguard its strength and sovereignty amid evolving global dynamics.
