Oman Launches Sultan Haitham Chairs Programme to Promote Research and Innovation

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The Research and Innovation Authority has reviewed the Sultan Haitham Chairs Programme in higher education institutions, describing it as one of the Sultanate’s most significant national initiatives aimed at advancing scientific research, innovation, and sustainable development.

The programme was reviewed during a meeting of the Authority’s Board of Directors chaired by HH Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Authority.

Named after His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the initiative seeks to establish a distinguished national research platform that addresses development challenges through scientific methodologies while supporting innovation and the transition towards a sustainable knowledge-based economy in line with Oman Vision 2040.

The Sultan Haitham Chair for Advanced Technologies has been launched as the first chair under the programme. The initiative is designed to encourage competition among Omani universities to transform national challenges into opportunities for innovation and excellence by developing practical solutions that serve multiple development sectors.

Officials noted that assigning the programme under the name of His Majesty reflects the leadership’s strong commitment to research and innovation as national priorities and acknowledges their important role in supporting economic development and generating effective solutions aligned with Oman’s development goals.

The programme focuses on attracting leading scientific expertise, building national research capacities, and strengthening strategic partnerships at both local and international levels to facilitate knowledge transfer and technology localization.

It also aims to support evidence-based policymaking, improve the international ranking of Omani academic institutions, and strengthen the position of the Sultanate of Oman in global innovation indicators.

According to the Authority, the programme adopts an integrated governance framework with strict requirements for host institutions and high standards for selecting chairholders. Sustainable funding mechanisms have also been introduced to ensure continuity of research contributions, support postgraduate students, and provide advisory services that benefit society and industry.

The initiative further emphasizes the dissemination of knowledge through the publication of high-quality scientific outputs, while ensuring effective management of data and intellectual property in accordance with international best practices.

Authorities stated that all activities under the programme will undergo rigorous periodic evaluations to measure applied impact, including patents and knowledge-based solutions capable of enriching the national economy with innovative products and services and enhancing Oman’s global competitiveness.
