Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: The Government of the Republic of Tajikistan has established the Abu Ali ibn Sina (Avicenna) International Award in Medicine through a presidential decree aimed at honoring the legacy of one of the most prominent figures in the history of global medical science.

The initiative, introduced by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan and Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon, seeks to recognize outstanding contributions in medicine at the international level while promoting scientific research and strengthening global healthcare systems.

The award is named after Abu Ali ibn Sina (Avicenna), the renowned Tajik polymath whose extensive contributions to medicine, philosophy, and science continue to influence modern healthcare. His works, particularly in the fields of human health, environmental science, and infectious disease prevention, remain widely studied and respected across the world.

Officials noted that Ibn Sina’s scientific theories and medical guidance have retained both scholarly and practical relevance, with several of his observations later being validated through modern scientific research. His legacy continues to serve as an intellectual foundation for advancements in global medicine.

The decree outlines the establishment of the award, including the development of its governing regulations and the formation of a dedicated fund. It is intended to encourage medical scholars and researchers both within Tajikistan and internationally.

Authorities emphasized that the award reflects Tajikistan’s long-standing tradition in medical science and contributes to addressing contemporary global health challenges, including the prevention and management of infectious diseases.

It was also highlighted that health and sanitation hold a central place in the scientific heritage of Ibn Sina, whose name continues to be commemorated in Tajikistan through institutions such as the State Medical University and a district in the capital, Dushanbe.

Each year on August 18, the country observes the professional Day of Healthcare Workers in honor of Ibn Sina’s birth anniversary, underscoring his enduring influence on medical science and public health.

The Abu Ali ibn Sina International Award in Medicine is expected to be conferred upon individuals who demonstrate exceptional achievements in international healthcare and medical research, further strengthening global scientific cooperation and innovation in the field of medicine.
