Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijan showcased its achievements in urban planning, architecture and sustainable development at the 25th International White City Ashgabat 2026 Exhibition and Conference in Turkmenistan, underlining the country’s growing role in shaping global discussions on the future of cities.
Addressing the event, Qismat Gozalov highlighted Azerbaijan’s rich architectural heritage and major urban development initiatives, while drawing attention to the legacy of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum 13 held in Baku.
The ambassador noted that Azerbaijani cities situated along the historic Silk Road have long served as centres of trade, craftsmanship and culture, reflecting a unique combination of Eastern and Western architectural influences.
Gozalov also stated that 2026 had been declared the Year of Urban Planning and Architecture in Azerbaijan under a decree signed by Ilham Aliyev. He added that Baku’s successful hosting of major international events, including COP29 and WUF13, demonstrated Azerbaijan’s active contribution to global cooperation on urbanisation and sustainable development.
Discussing modern urban challenges, the ambassador emphasised that rapid urbanisation, climate change, social inclusion, transport systems and digital governance are increasingly interconnected, requiring coordinated international responses.
He said international forums provide valuable opportunities for exchanging expertise, promoting sustainable solutions and shaping the future of urban development worldwide.
Referring to WUF13, Gozalov described the forum as a major global platform that brought together policymakers, experts and stakeholders to discuss innovative solutions for creating safer, more sustainable and inclusive cities.
He also highlighted the importance of the Leaders’ Summit, organised for the first time as part of WUF13, describing it as a significant step towards defining strategic priorities for urban development and strengthening international cooperation.
The ambassador further pointed to ongoing reconstruction and urban development projects in the Karabakh region, where Azerbaijan is implementing modern planning principles and sustainable approaches through Smart City and Smart Village initiatives.
Concluding his remarks, Gozalov noted that both Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are pursuing ambitious urban modernisation programmes, reflecting the key role cities play in the development agendas of both countries and their shared commitment to sustainable growth.
