Kazakh Qurultay Sets Agenda for Upcoming Session

Astana, The Gulf Observer: The Bureau of Kazakhstan’s Qurultay has approved the agenda for the upcoming session of the country’s new legislative body at a meeting chaired by Speaker Aibek Dadebay, according to media reports.

During the meeting, deputies are scheduled to consider in the first reading draft laws on ratifying amendments to Kazakhstan’s commitments on trade in services within the framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as an agreement between Kazakhstan and Serbia on military-technical cooperation.

The Bureau also discussed several institutional matters, including the establishment of a Public Chamber under the Qurultay, cooperation with the Institute of Parliamentarism and the opening of a Public Reception Office.

Chairpersons of the Qurultay’s standing committees presented draft legislation submitted by the Majilis covering healthcare, consumer rights protection, veterinary affairs, improvements to the law-making process and other areas. The Bureau also established deadlines for preparing conclusions on the proposed legislation.

The upcoming session follows the earlier approval by Qurultay deputies of regulations governing the procedures and timing of sessions of the newly established legislative body.

The agenda reflects the Qurultay’s expanding legislative and institutional role, with the forthcoming session set to address issues spanning international economic commitments, bilateral cooperation, healthcare, consumer protection and improvements to Kazakhstan’s legislative framework.
