Oman's Annual Tribute: Commemorating the Global Impact of Influential Omani Figures

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: Today, the Sultanate of Oman joyfully commemorates the annual day dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the globally influential Omani figures listed in the UNESCO Programme for Important Historical Events and Globally Influential Personalities. This auspicious day, observed on February 10 each year, serves as a testament to the cognitive and scientific legacy of remarkable Omani individuals, both at the local and global levels.

This year’s celebration holds special significance as it marks the 350th anniversary of the establishment of Jibreen Fort, an iconic historical milestone in the rich tapestry of Oman’s heritage.

The Sultanate of Oman has been at the forefront of UNESCO’s recognition, successfully incorporating seven distinguished Omani figures and one pivotal historic event into the esteemed program. Notable personalities acknowledged by UNESCO include:

  1. Al Khalil bin Ahmed Al Farahidi – Linguist (2005)
  2. Rashid bin Omairah Al Hashimi Al Rustaqi – Doctor and Pharmacist (2013)
  3. Unnamed Polymath and Reformer (2015)
  4. Sheikh Nour Al Din Abdullah bin Humaid Al Salmi – Socialite (2019)
  5. Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin Muhammad Al Azdi (Ibn Al Dhahabi) – Doctor and Physicist (2019)
  6. Nasser bin Salem Al Rawahi (Abu Muslim Al Bahlani) – Omani Poet (2019)
  7. Ahmed bin Majid Al Saadi – Omani Navigator (2021)

In a historic development, during the Administrative and Financial Affairs Committee meetings of the forty-second session of the UNESCO General Conference held in November last year, the Sultanate of Oman successfully introduced two new cultural elements into the program:

  1. The 350th Anniversary of the Establishment of Jibreen Fort
  2. The 150th Anniversary of the Death of the Historian and Literary Poet Hamid bin Muhammad bin Raziq

These additions further underscore Oman’s commitment to preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage on the global stage. The Sultanate expresses gratitude for the continued collaboration with UNESCO and remains steadfast in its dedication to upholding the legacies of its influential figures and pivotal historical events.
