Jamaica Welcomes UN Security Council Resolution on Western Sahara, Backs Morocco’s Plan
New York, The Gulf Observer: Jamaica has welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 and expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a basis for resolving the Western Sahara dispute.
Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, conveyed her country’s position during a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to a joint communiqué signed by the two ministers, Jamaica welcomed the resolution’s call for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations, taking Morocco’s autonomy plan as a basis for the political process. The communiqué also noted that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute one of the possible solutions to the dispute.
Johnson Smith also congratulated Morocco on what the communiqué described as its diplomatic efforts to build international support and momentum around the autonomy initiative.
During their meeting, Bourita and Johnson Smith agreed to maintain political consultations between Morocco and Jamaica and to coordinate positions on issues of mutual interest.
The development comes amid renewed diplomatic activity surrounding the Western Sahara issue during the UN General Assembly session, with several countries publicly reaffirming or announcing positions concerning Morocco’s autonomy proposal and sovereignty claims.
Jamaica’s latest position represents a notable development in its engagement with the Western Sahara dossier and further highlights the continuing international diplomatic discussions over a political settlement under the UN framework.
