Prabowo Subianto to Discuss Indonesia’s OECD Membership with Secretary General
Bogor, The Gulf Observer: President-elect Prabowo Subianto is set to meet with the Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Mathias Cormann, to discuss Indonesia’s accession to full membership in the organization. The announcement was made by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto following a meeting between President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Cormann at the Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java on Tuesday.
“Secretary General Cormann will also meet with the President-elect,” Hartarto stated.
Currently serving as Minister of Defense, Prabowo Subianto will engage in discussions with Cormann alongside key figures including Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani, chairs of the DPR RI, the National OECD Accession Team, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), and the Indonesian Employers’ Association (Apindo).
Hartarto also noted that Cormann is scheduled to inaugurate a technical workshop on the OECD accession process, involving relevant ministries and institutions.
During the meeting with Cormann, President Jokowi was accompanied by Hartarto, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to France, Andorra, and Monaco Mohamad Oemar, Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Indonesia to UNESCO, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pahala Mansury, and Deputy Minister of Finance Suahasil Nazara.
Indonesia has been on the OECD accession list as a country in the process of becoming a full member. Since 2007, Indonesia has been a key partner of the OECD, alongside Brazil, India, China, and South Africa.
Hartarto mentioned that Indonesia’s application for full membership was accepted during the Ministerial Council Meeting, which commemorated the 10th anniversary of the OECD Southeast Asia Regional Program (SEARP) in Paris, France, earlier this May.
“Full membership in the OECD will provide Indonesia with opportunities to overcome the middle-income trap and implement a second stage of economic reform through the adoption of best practices from other countries,” Hartarto remarked.
The discussions between Prabowo Subianto and Mathias Cormann are expected to advance Indonesia’s efforts towards full integration into the OECD, further enhancing its economic policies and international cooperation.
