Azerbaijan’s Khankendi and Romania’s Baia Mare Agree to Establish Sister-City Ties
Bucharest, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijan’s Khankendi city and Romania’s Baia Mare have agreed to establish sister-city relations as part of broader efforts to expand regional cooperation between Azerbaijan and Romania.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between Elchin Yusubov, Special Representative of the President of Azerbaijan in Khankendi city and the Aghdara and Khojaly districts, and Ioan Doru Dancus, Mayor of Baia Mare, during Yusubov’s official visit to Romania.
The discussions focused on developing ties between Khankendi and Baia Mare, launching joint projects, exchanging experience and exploring other areas of mutual interest. The two sides agreed to sign a formal twinning agreement between the cities.
During the visit, Yusubov also met Gabriel-Valer Zetea, President of Romania’s Maramureș County Council. The meeting addressed prospects for expanding cooperation between Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region and Romania’s Maramureș region in economic, investment, cultural-humanitarian, sports and other fields.
Yusubov briefed the Romanian side on ongoing reconstruction, development and infrastructure projects in Karabakh and East Zangezur, as well as investment opportunities available to foreign investors. The Azerbaijani side also invited Romanian representatives to visit Karabakh and explore opportunities for cooperation and investment.
The sides further discussed the possibility of organizing mutual regional days and a business forum bringing together entrepreneurs from Karabakh and Maramureș, with a view to promoting direct contacts and identifying new areas for economic cooperation.
The planned sister-city agreement between Khankendi and Baia Mare is expected to provide a framework for closer municipal cooperation and strengthen people-to-people, cultural and economic links between Azerbaijan and Romania.
