Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Denounces Belgian and Dutch Parliamentary Resolutions as Biased and Destabilizing

Baku, The Gulf Observer: Milli Majlis has strongly condemned recent resolutions adopted by the parliaments of Belgium and Netherlands, accusing them of undermining the ongoing Azerbaijan–Armenia peace process and distorting regional realities.
In an official statement, the Azerbaijani parliament said the resolutions, passed on April 16, 2026, contain “biased and unilateral” claims that misrepresent Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory and rely on what it described as “false accusations and ungrounded narratives.”
The statement asserted that the documents distort the historical context and consequences of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, while also reflecting what it termed as longstanding anti-Azerbaijani and Islamophobic sentiments within certain circles. It further described the resolutions as a violation of international law and an attempt to provoke tensions at a sensitive stage in the peace process.
According to the Milli Majlis, the timing of the resolutions—coinciding with ongoing parliamentary-level engagements between Azerbaijan and Armenia—demonstrates that the intent behind these actions is not to promote dialogue, but rather to incite hostility and hinder reconciliation efforts.
The statement also criticized the omission of key developments, including the outcomes of the Washington Peace Summit and the initialing of the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” in the Belgian resolution. This omission, it said, highlights a lack of objectivity and understanding among the authors of the document.
Addressing legal concerns, the parliament rejected calls within the resolutions to release individuals convicted of war crimes, stating that such demands contradict international legal frameworks. It emphasized that relevant international bodies, including the International Court of Justice and UN mechanisms, have upheld Azerbaijan’s legal position and dismissed claims against it.
The Milli Majlis urged the governments concerned and the European Union to refrain from what it described as disruptive interference in the peace process, calling for measures to prevent similar actions in the future.
Concluding its statement, the Azerbaijani parliament demanded that the legislative bodies of Belgium and the Netherlands halt what it termed a “campaign of hostility” against Azerbaijan, warning that such steps risk encouraging revanchist elements and undermining both regional peace efforts and broader European security and economic interests.
