Expanding U.S. LNG Imports Key to National Interest, Energy Security: Japan’s PM Ishiba

Tokyo, The Gulf Observer: Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reaffirmed on Sunday that increasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the United States, as agreed at the recent Japan-U.S. summit, serves Japan’s national interests. His remarks were reported by local media following his appearance on a program by Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK).
During the discussion, Ishiba underscored the importance of diversifying Japan’s energy sources to ensure long-term stability. He also expressed his commitment to addressing the U.S. trade deficit with Japan, a key priority for U.S. President Donald Trump.
Providing insights into his summit with Trump in Washington on Friday, Ishiba noted that the U.S. leader did not request an additional increase in Japan’s defense spending. “That is a matter for Japan to decide,” he stated, emphasizing Japan’s sovereignty over its defense policies.
Regarding Nippon Steel Corporation’s planned acquisition of United States Steel Corporation, Ishiba clarified that the deal is more than a mere takeover. “It’s not just an acquisition. An investment will be made, and (U.S. Steel) will remain a U.S. company,” he explained, though he refrained from further elaboration, echoing statements made during his joint press conference with Trump after their summit.
The meeting between Ishiba and Trump reaffirmed the strong economic and strategic ties between Japan and the United States, with energy cooperation and trade balance remaining key areas of discussion.
