Indonesian House Speaker Puan Maharani Calls for Strengthening Press Commitment on National Press Day

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani has urged the mass media to use the momentum of National Press Day, observed annually on February 9, to reinforce their commitment to safeguarding democracy in Indonesia.
“Happy National Press Day 2025! The mass media and press personnel must remember their role as watchdogs of government activities and as defenders of people’s rights,” Maharani stated in Jakarta on Sunday.
She acknowledged the vital role played by the media during the 2024 General Elections, including the presidential, legislative, and regional head elections (Pilkada). While recognizing the press as a key factor in the electoral process, she emphasized that their responsibilities extend beyond election coverage.
“The media must not only oversee the policies of government officials but also ensure that underrepresented voices, such as minorities and marginalized groups, are heard,” she added.
Maharani also commended journalists for their dedication and perseverance amid the rapid evolution of information dissemination. She stressed that advancements in digital technology demand greater vigilance in news reporting.
“With so much information available, verifying facts is crucial to prevent the spread of false news,” she noted.
Addressing challenges faced by the press industry, Maharani highlighted the closure of several media organizations and the layoffs of skilled journalists in recent years. She called on the public to support the national press in maintaining quality journalism.
“The community plays an essential role in supporting a competent and quality national press, including by subscribing to media outlets with a strong track record of journalistic integrity,” she stated.
She further underscored the importance of public support in sustaining a free and responsible press, particularly during challenging times for the media industry.
