Landslide in Southern Philippines Claims 37 Lives

Philippines 37

Manila, The Gulf Observer: In the wake of a devastating landslide that struck the southern Philippines, the death toll has risen to 37, as confirmed by Edward Macapili, an official of Davao de Oro province, on Sunday. The incident occurred on Tuesday night outside a gold mine in Maco town, Davao de Oro, burying homes and vehicles en route to the Apex Mining-operated site.

Despite valiant efforts from over 300 rescue workers, the challenging terrain, heavy rainfall, and the persistent threat of additional landslides have hindered progress. Rescue operations resumed on Sunday morning, with workers tirelessly digging through thick mud in the hopes of locating survivors.

The revised tally of missing individuals stands at 63, a downward adjustment from the initial count of 77. Additionally, there are 32 reported injuries. Officials have not immediately provided reasons for the revision, leaving room for further investigation.

Edward Macapili expressed the difficulties faced by rescue teams, stating, “Operations are being hampered by heavy rain, thick mud, and the constant threat of further landslides.” The adverse weather conditions add a layer of complexity to an already challenging rescue mission.

The landslide has brought forth an outpouring of grief and solidarity from local communities, as the nation comes to terms with the tragic loss of lives. The government, alongside various agencies, is working diligently to provide support to the affected families and expedite rescue operations.

As the rescue efforts persist, the nation stands united in offering condolences to the victims’ families and expressing gratitude for the resilience and dedication demonstrated by the rescue teams in the face of adversity.
