Myanmar Hosts International Conference to Strengthen Copyright System and Foster Innovation

Yangon, The Gulf Observer: The first day of the International Conference on Intellectual Property 2025 commenced yesterday at the Jasmine Naypyitaw Hotel, with the participation of General Mya Tun Oo, Chairman of the Central Committee on Intellectual Property Rights.
In his opening remarks, General Mya Tun Oo emphasized that the conference is aimed at strengthening Myanmar’s copyright ecosystem, fostering innovation, promoting economic development, and preserving cultural heritage. He underlined that the conference would serve as a platform to assess the strengths and weaknesses of Myanmar’s copyright system by drawing comparisons with international models, and to identify procedures for adopting an improved and more effective system.
Highlighting global experiences, the General noted that in countries where intellectual property (IP) systems are well-developed, human resources play a crucial role in driving economic growth. He stressed the importance of implementing IP awareness programmes tailored for students and young people, encouraging creativity, innovation, and a spirit of invention from an early age.
Furthermore, he underscored the need to strengthen collaboration between university research departments and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to facilitate the commercialization of innovative ideas. He stated that continuous awareness campaigns are essential to further enhance intellectual property protection nationwide.
The inaugural session of the conference was also attended by Union Minister for Commerce U Tun Ohn, who serves as Vice-Chair of the committee, along with deputy ministers, directors-general, local and international experts, keynote speakers, and academic contributors.
