Oman, Iran Agree on Framework to Restore Safe Navigation Through Strait of Hormuz

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi paid a working visit to Iran on Tuesday and held consultations with Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Seyed Abbas Araghchi on developments concerning navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a joint statement issued following the consultations, the two sides emphasized the importance they attach to restoring safe navigation through the strategic waterway while preserving the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the two countries.

The ministers discussed a phased framework intended to provide a practical and implementable basis for addressing the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz following the recent war and its tragic consequences.

Under the proposed framework, Oman and Iran would establish a joint temporary navigational corridor through the Strait and implement a joint project to clear mines from the waterway.

The two sides agreed to continue technical negotiations aimed at establishing a permanent navigational corridor and determining arrangements for the future administration of the Strait. Discussions will also cover mechanisms for information-sharing, traffic management, and the provision of relevant navigational and security services.

The ministers underscored the importance of holding joint consultations with regional states bordering the waters of the Gulf as part of efforts to ensure safe and sustainable navigation.

They also stressed the need to uphold applicable international law and respect the sovereign rights of all coastal states.

The consultations reflected the two countries’ efforts to develop practical arrangements aimed at enhancing maritime safety and ensuring the continuity of navigation through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
