Oman Mourns Death of Mountaineer Nadhira Al Harthy Killed in Pakistan Avalanche
Islamabad, The Gulf Observer: Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed profound sorrow over the death of renowned Omani mountaineer Nadhira bint Ahmed Al Harthy, who lost her life in a tragic avalanche during a climbing expedition on Broad Peak in northern Pakistan.
In a statement, the ministry said it was coordinating closely with the relevant Pakistani authorities to complete the necessary procedures for the repatriation of Al Harthy’s body to the Sultanate of Oman.
The ministry paid tribute to Al Harthy’s contributions to humanitarian and cultural relations, highlighting her role as Chairperson of the Oman-Nepal Friendship Association. It said she played a significant part in promoting community initiatives and strengthening friendship and cooperation between Oman and Nepal through people-to-people engagement and cultural exchange.
Describing her as a dedicated and distinguished national figure, the ministry praised her lasting contributions and extended its deepest condolences and sympathies to her family, praying for eternal peace for the deceased and strength and patience for her loved ones during this difficult time.
Al Harthy was widely recognized as the first Omani woman to summit Mount Everest and one of the Arab world’s most accomplished high-altitude mountaineers. Her achievements inspired a new generation of adventurers, particularly women, across Oman and the Gulf region.
She was among a group of climbers caught in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range during an expedition. Search and rescue operations have continued for other members of the climbing team affected by the disaster.
