Oman to Mark International Workers’ Day with Celebration Honouring Labour Contributions

Oman

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The General Federation of Workers of the Sultanate of Oman will organise a special ceremony on Sunday to mark International Workers’ Day, celebrating the vital role of private sector workers in driving economic growth and national development.

The event will be held under the patronage of Dr. Hilal Ali Al Sabti, with the participation of senior officials, representatives from private sector establishments, civil society institutions, and key stakeholders in labour affairs.

The ceremony aims to underscore the importance of the trade union movement in Oman and its contributions toward improving working conditions across the private sector. It will also feature the recognition of winners of the Trade Union Work Award for 2025.

As part of the celebrations, the Federation will launch a media campaign focused on strengthening the social protection system, safeguarding workers against sudden termination of employment contracts, and highlighting job security challenges during periods of unemployment.

The event will further include a review of major achievements, challenges, and key indicators outlined in the Federation’s 2025 annual report. Additionally, an artwork titled “Oman’s Arms” will be unveiled, aimed at showcasing the value of workers in society while promoting professionalism, dedication, ambition, and loyalty, and reinforcing a sense of belonging in the workplace.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, the Federation will sign a cooperation agreement with Petroleum Development Oman and a memorandum of cooperation with the Oman Energy Association (OPAL). These agreements reflect continued collaboration between trade unions and private sector institutions, with the objective of strengthening constructive dialogue, supporting labour market stability, and improving workplace conditions.

The Trade Union Work Award, introduced by the Federation, recognises trade unions, government entities, private sector organisations, and civil society institutions that contribute to advancing trade union activities and promoting labour market balance and social stability.

According to the Federation, the number of trade unions in Oman reached approximately 340 by the end of December 2025, indicating steady growth in organised labour representation and engagement across the country.
