PKK's Reign of Violence Over Kurdish People Nears Collapse: Hakan Fidan

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye issued a stern warning to Western powers on Monday regarding their continued support for the YPG terrorist group in Syria under the guise of combating Daesh.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Ankara with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that the situation in Syria has fundamentally changed.

“Conditions in Syria have changed. We believe it’s only a matter of time before PKK/YPG is eliminated,” Fidan stated, referring to the YPG as the Syrian offshoot of the PKK terrorist organization. The PKK has been responsible for a decades-long insurgency that has claimed tens of thousands of lives, including women and children.

Fidan criticized the United States for its ongoing military and financial support to the YPG, ostensibly to prevent a resurgence of Daesh. He warned that any attempts to exploit Daesh as a pretext for strengthening the PKK/YPG would not succeed.

“If you [the West] have different aims in the region, if you want to serve another policy by using Daesh as an excuse to embolden the PKK, then there is no way for that either,” Fidan said.

He further noted that the PKK’s oppressive influence over the Kurdish population in the region is nearing collapse and urged the YPG to lay down its arms in Syria immediately.

Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi echoed Türkiye’s concerns, underscoring the interlinked nature of regional security.

“Anything that threatens Türkiye’s security also threatens the security of the region,” Safadi said. He affirmed that Jordan is coordinating closely with Türkiye to enhance security and stability in the region amid shared challenges.

Fidan’s remarks come amid heightened tensions over the role of foreign powers in Syria and the enduring threat posed by terrorist groups. The Turkish government has consistently expressed opposition to Western support for the YPG, viewing it as a direct threat to its national security and regional stability.
