Baku, The Gulf Observer: President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Thursday received Kurban Kurbanov, a prominent public and political figure from the Republic of Dagestan of the Russian Federation, and presented him with Azerbaijan’s prestigious “Dostlug” (Friendship) Order in recognition of his contributions to strengthening ties between the peoples of Azerbaijan and Dagestan.
During the ceremony held in Baku, President Aliyev congratulated Kurban Kurbanov on his recent anniversary and extended his best wishes to him and his family. The Azerbaijani leader praised the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Azerbaijan and Dagestan, highlighting the significant role played by the Kurbanov family in fostering closer relations between the two neighboring peoples.
President Aliyev paid tribute to Kurbanov’s late father, Seid Jemalovich Kurbanov, describing him as a respected elder whose friendship with Azerbaijan’s National Leader Heydar Aliyev symbolized the deep bonds of brotherhood between Azerbaijan and Dagestan.
The President recalled that Azerbaijan had always felt the support of the Dagestani people during difficult periods of its history, emphasizing that the close relationship between the two nations remains an important factor for peace, stability and development in the Caucasus region.
He noted that both Seid Jemalovich and Kurban Kurbanov had made valuable contributions to strengthening people-to-people ties, promoting regional economic development and reinforcing the foundations of security and stability in the region.
President Aliyev also reflected on the legacy of his grandfather, Aziz Aliyev, who served as a leader in Dagestan during the years of the Second World War. He highlighted Aziz Aliyev’s role in supporting the Dagestani people during a challenging period and noted that his memory continues to be highly respected in Dagestan.
The Azerbaijani President revealed that a bust of Aziz Aliyev, which had once stood in his grandfather’s office in Makhachkala and was later preserved by the people of Dagestan, now occupies a place in his own office as a symbol of the enduring historical and cultural connections between the two peoples.
Emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation, President Aliyev stated that strengthening the fraternal relations between Azerbaijan and Dagestan remains essential for the sustainable development and prosperity of the wider Caucasus region.
At the conclusion of the meeting, President Aliyev personally presented Kurban Kurbanov with the “Dostlug” Order, one of Azerbaijan’s highest state decorations, honoring his efforts to promote friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation between Azerbaijan and Dagestan.
