President Prabowo Hails Indonesia’s Homegrown Car Industry as Milestone Toward Automotive Self-Reliance

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has hailed the country’s progress in developing domestically manufactured vehicles, describing it as a significant milestone in achieving national self-reliance in the automotive industry.

Speaking at the National Gathering of the Indonesian Science, Technology, and Industry Convention (KSTI) in Jakarta on Friday, President Prabowo expressed pride in travelling in the Maung presidential vehicle, which was developed by Indonesia’s domestic defence and automotive industry.

“I have a deep sense of satisfaction. When I was inaugurated and returned from the inauguration, I was able to ride in a car made in Indonesia,” the President said.

Prabowo noted that despite more than eight decades of independence, Indonesia had only recently begun producing its own domestically developed vehicles. He praised the contributions of universities, researchers and industry stakeholders in advancing the country’s technological and industrial capabilities.

“I thank our universities. I am grateful that we are beginning to move toward having our own cars,” he said.

The President acknowledged that the Maung is not yet entirely manufactured using locally sourced components. However, he said its domestic content level (TKDN) of approximately 60 to 70 percent represents substantial progress toward establishing a self-reliant national automotive industry.

In a light-hearted remark, Prabowo recalled that the vehicle experienced minor leaks when driven through heavy rain during its early months of use. Nevertheless, he reaffirmed his commitment to using locally manufactured products as a means of supporting Indonesia’s domestic industries.

“At the very least, we’ve started. We must have the courage to begin,” he said.

During the event, President Prabowo also highlighted the crucial role of scientists, academics, researchers and professors in driving Indonesia’s future development. He stressed that building strong human resources, advancing technological capabilities and fostering patriotism are essential pillars for national progress.

The President further underscored the importance of unity among national leaders, stating that cooperation among a country’s elites is a decisive factor in determining its success.

“From what I have learned from thousands of years of history, the nations whose elites are able to work together are the ones that rise,” Prabowo said.

The remarks reflect the Indonesian government’s broader commitment to strengthening domestic manufacturing, promoting technological innovation and reducing reliance on imports as part of its long-term strategy for industrial development and economic self-sufficiency.
