President Prabowo Secures Strategic Cooperation Commitments from Japanese Investors

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Prabowo Subianto has secured substantial cooperation commitments from 20 prominent Japanese business leaders affiliated with the Jakarta Japan Club (JJC) during a meeting at the Presidential Palace. The agreements span key sectors, including strategic energy, reforestation, and agricultural development.

Accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, President Prabowo emphasized the importance of these partnerships in advancing Indonesia’s economic and environmental goals. Hartarto highlighted that the discussions were part of the Japanese investment commitment brought by the Japan-Indonesia Association delegation.

Key Highlights of the Commitments

  1. Masela Block Gas Project
    • Japan reaffirmed its support for the continuation of the Abadi Gas Field project in the Masela Block, located in the Arafura Sea near the Tanimbar Islands.
    • With an investment of USD 21 billion, the project is expected to begin operations next year and reach completion in the coming years.
    • President Prabowo has instructed ministries and institutions to address any challenges hindering its progress.
  2. Patimban Port Development
    • Japanese businesses committed to advancing the development of Patimban Port in Subang, West Java, a critical infrastructure project aimed at balancing logistics flows across Indonesia’s regions.
  3. Reforestation and Land Management
    • Sumitomo Forestry pledged collaboration on reforestation projects covering 130,000 hectares in Central and West Kalimantan, focusing on timber production and ecosystem restoration.
    • A partnership with local entrepreneurs to develop food estates in Central Kalimantan was also announced, aimed at bolstering Indonesia’s agricultural sector.
  4. Petrochemical Cooperation
    • Additional agreements were made to expand petrochemical collaboration, strengthening Indonesia’s industrial base.

Participants and Future Steps

The meeting was attended by senior Indonesian ministers, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, and Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir.

Representing Japan were high-level executives from Sumitomo Forestry, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation, as well as officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japanese Embassy.

The commitments signal Japan’s intention to deepen its role as a major investor in Indonesia. The success of these initiatives is expected to bolster Indonesia’s economic development while promoting sustainability and innovation in key industries.
