Resignations of Chief Justice and Central Bank Governor Amid Widening Protests in Bangladesh
Dhaka, The Gulf Observer: In a significant political development in Bangladesh, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder have both tendered their resignations, according to official statements. This move comes in the wake of escalating student protests which have led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing the country.
The resignation of Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan was announced by law ministry adviser Asif Nazrul in a Facebook video post on Saturday. Nazrul indicated that Hassan stepped down following warnings from students about potential “dire consequences” if he did not resign. In his post, Nazrul urged demonstrators to maintain peace and avoid damaging public property.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder has also resigned from his post. However, finance ministry adviser Salehuddin Ahmed stated that Talukder’s resignation has yet to be formally accepted, citing the crucial nature of the role he occupies.
The protests, which initially began as student demonstrations, have expanded to target additional officials appointed during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration. The situation remains fluid as the country grapples with these developments.
