Saudi Arabia Welcomes Palestinian Leadership Reforms, Supports Hussein Al-Sheikh’s Appointment

Hussein Al-Sheikh

Riyadh, The Gulf Observer: Saudi Arabia on Saturday welcomed the reform measures announced by the Palestinian leadership, including the creation of new senior posts and the appointment of Hussein Al-Sheikh as Vice President of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Vice President of the State of Palestine.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kingdom expressed its best wishes for Al-Sheikh’s success and emphasized that the reforms would bolster Palestinian political efforts. It reiterated its longstanding support for the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights, foremost among them the right to self-determination through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The PLO announced on Saturday that President Mahmoud Abbas had nominated Hussein Al-Sheikh, a close ally and current member of the PLO Executive Committee, to the newly created roles. His nomination was backed by the organization’s key governing bodies, positioning Al-Sheikh as a leading candidate to succeed President Abbas in any future election, or, should elections not be possible, as his de facto successor.

The move is seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen Palestinian institutions and prepare for future leadership transitions.
