Swedish Parliament Delegation to Visit Vietnam to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: A delegation from the Swedish Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, led by Chairman Aron Emilsson, will visit Vietnam from March 2 to March 5, the Swedish Embassy in Hanoi announced on Sunday.

The seven-member delegation, accompanied by officials from the committee’s secretariat, will hold discussions with Vietnamese leaders and key stakeholders in Hanoi and Hồ Chí Minh City. The visit aims to enhance bilateral relations, explore Vietnam’s rapid economic growth, and discuss future collaboration in key areas.

A major focus of the discussions will be on science, technology, and innovation, reflecting a shared vision to address global challenges and create sustainable development opportunities. The delegation will also engage with representatives from over 70 Swedish companies operating in Vietnam across various sectors.

Since 1998, the Swedish Riksdag (Parliament) and the Vietnamese National Assembly have maintained a long-standing partnership, evolving from aid-funded projects to a cooperation of equals. This collaboration has introduced elements of Sweden’s governance model, including the establishment of ombudsmen, the first Youth Parliament in Hà Nội (2006), and initiatives to enhance public engagement, particularly among women parliamentarians.

These efforts have helped increase the number of full-time Vietnamese parliamentarians and facilitated more frequent exchanges, making the partnership the most extensive that the Swedish Riksdag has undertaken with any foreign parliament.

The Swedish Riksdag, a 349-member single-chamber legislature, plays a crucial role in foreign policy, taxation, state expenditure, and government oversight. The Committee on Foreign Affairs, as part of the Riksdag, is responsible for shaping Sweden’s international relations and foreign policy direction.

This visit is expected to further strengthen diplomatic, economic, and technological ties between Sweden and Vietnam, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable and innovative development.
