Turkmenistan, ILO Review Labour Cooperation, Reaffirm Commitment to International Standards
Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Turkmenistan and the International Labour Organization (ILO) reviewed the progress of their cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration on labour standards and social partnership during talks held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 2.
Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov met with Corinne Vargha, Director of the International Labour Standards Department of the ILO, to discuss the current state and future prospects of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN agency.
The two sides noted that cooperation with the ILO remains an important component of Turkmenistan’s international partnerships, contributing to the improvement of national labour legislation, the promotion of social partnership, and the implementation of internationally recognized labour standards.
During the meeting, both parties underscored the importance of implementing the 2026 Roadmap for Cooperation between Turkmenistan and the ILO, describing it as a key framework for advancing joint initiatives.
The discussions also highlighted that cooperation with the ILO forms part of the agenda of the Interdepartmental Commission on Ensuring the Fulfilment of Turkmenistan’s International Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law Obligations. Turkmenistan reaffirmed its commitment to meeting all obligations arising from its membership in the ILO.
The two sides emphasized the need to expand project-based cooperation with United Nations specialized agencies, including the ILO, and confirmed their readiness to further strengthen practical collaboration, including efforts related to the establishment of an ILO office in Turkmenistan.
Special attention was given to the positive progress in cooperation between the National Centre of Trade Unions of Turkmenistan and the ILO Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV), which is aimed at promoting social dialogue and advancing the implementation of international labour standards.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in further deepening the partnership between Turkmenistan and the International Labour Organization across all areas of shared interest.
