Turkmenistan, UN Officials Review Cooperation and Outcomes of New York Visit

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov held talks with UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Dmitry Shlapachenko and UNDP Resident Representative Narine Saakyan on June 3, reviewing key areas of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations and discussing the outcomes of a recent high-level visit to New York.

According to official sources, the meeting focused on ongoing collaboration between Turkmenistan and the UN, as well as the results of the Turkmen delegation’s participation in the UN Security Council’s high-level open debates on “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the International System Based on the Central Role of the United Nations.”

The participants emphasized that Turkmenistan’s engagement in the event reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening the UN’s central role in global affairs, promoting preventive diplomacy, encouraging a culture of dialogue, and advancing the principles of neutrality as essential tools for maintaining international peace and security.

The discussions also highlighted a series of meetings held during the New York visit with senior UN officials, including the UN Secretary-General, the President of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, deputy secretaries-general, the UNDP Administrator, and the head of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism. The Turkmen delegation also held talks with foreign policy leaders from several countries, including China, Pakistan, Cuba, Azerbaijan, and the United States.

Officials noted that these engagements reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s active role in promoting international initiatives, supporting the interests of landlocked developing countries, and advancing the implementation of the Avaza Programme of Action for 2024–2034 and the Avaza Political Declaration.

The meeting further reviewed initiatives proposed by the President of Turkmenistan during the International Forum dedicated to the International Year of Peace and Trust 2025, the International Day of Neutrality, and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, underscoring the country’s continued commitment to constructive international cooperation and multilateral diplomacy.
