UAE a Key Strategic Partner for Africa, South African Trade Official Says

Johannesburg, The Gulf Observer: The United Arab Emirates has emerged as a pivotal strategic partner for Africa, with Dubai’s position as a global hub for trade and investment creating new growth opportunities for South African businesses, according to a senior South African trade official.
Speaking to the Emirates News Agency on the sidelines of the Dubai-South Africa Business Forum in Johannesburg, Lester Bouah praised the trade mission organized by Dubai Chambers, describing it as a reflection of the growing momentum in bilateral economic relations and the shared commitment to strengthening cooperation.
Bouah noted that the United Arab Emirates is among South Africa’s leading economic and investment partners, with ties continuing to deepen through sustained efforts by both governments to enhance long-term strategic collaboration.
He said South Africa views the UAE as a key partner in advancing trade, investment, and broader economic cooperation, while also serving as an important gateway connecting African markets with the global economy.
According to Bouah, economic relations between the two countries have expanded significantly in recent years, supported by reciprocal visits by government officials and business leaders that underscore a mutual commitment to strengthening the partnership.
He highlighted that South Africa’s exports to the UAE have reached approximately US$2.68 billion, reflecting growing access to Emirati markets and increasing bilateral trade flows.
Bouah further noted that the UAE ranks among the leading foreign investors in South Africa, with Emirati investors launching 33 investment projects valued at around US$22.96 billion. These projects have created more than 5,500 jobs, demonstrating strong confidence in the South African market.
The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition is seeking to attract additional Emirati investments, particularly in productive sectors that can support economic growth and employment. Bouah identified advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, infrastructure development, logistics, and advanced technology as key areas offering significant potential for future cooperation.
He emphasized that relations between the two countries extend beyond trade and investment, encompassing strategic partnerships founded on trust, mutual respect, and shared interests. Bouah expressed optimism that bilateral cooperation will continue to expand into new sectors and create additional economic opportunities in the years ahead.
