Vietnam, France Strengthen Cooperation in Hydrogen Development

Bordeaux, The Gulf Observer: Hydrogen de France (HDF Energy), a prominent French energy company, has inaugurated its first fuel cell factory in Bordeaux. This milestone is set to pave the way for the establishment of “green” hydrogen factories in Vietnam and other countries in the future.

Trần Khánh Việt Dũng, Director of HDF Vietnam, highlighted the company’s extensive collaboration with several Vietnamese ministries and corporations, including the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Transport, the Vietnam Railway Corporation, and Vietnam Electricity.

HDF Energy has also initiated renewable energy projects in provinces such as Kiên Giang, Bình Thuận, and Ninh Thuận, areas known for their potential in offshore and onshore wind power and solar power. These renewable energy sources are integral to producing “green” hydrogen, which is essential for the transportation industry.

Notably, HDF Energy is collaborating with the Vietnam Railway Corporation on a significant project to convert nearly 200 outdated diesel locomotives to hydrogen power. This initiative aligns with Vietnam’s net-zero emissions strategy by 2050 and the “green” hydrogen energy development strategy, which is set to commence in early 2024.

Dũng expressed optimism about constructing HDF Energy’s first hydrogen factories in Vietnam in the near future.

In addition, HDF Energy has signed an agreement with Petrovietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) to develop power generation projects using renewable energy sources with Renewstable technology and hydrogen gas with Hypower technology. This collaboration aims to implement renewable energy and hydrogen power projects not only in Vietnam but also across the Asia-Pacific region.

HDF Energy is also working on other projects in Vietnam’s electricity and transportation sectors, supported by the Just Energy Transition Partnership and financial institutions like the French Development Agency (AFD).

Mathieu Geze, HDF Energy’s Executive Director for Asia, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting Việt Nam in its carbon emission reduction efforts.

Jean-François Clédel, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of Nouvelle Aquitaine, emphasized the region’s strong potential for cooperation with Vietnam in renewable energy, a sector represented by HDF Energy.

This development signifies a significant step towards strengthening energy cooperation between France and Vietnam, with a shared goal of advancing sustainable and renewable energy initiatives.
