Rome, The Gulf Observer: Chairman of the National Assembly of Việtnam, Trần Thanh Mẫn, met with Sergio Mattarella at the Presidential Palace in Rome on Monday afternoon (local time), as part of his official visit to Italy.

During the meeting, Chairman Mẫn conveyed greetings from Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm and congratulated Italy on its notable achievements under President Mattarella’s leadership. He underscored that despite geographical distance, Vietnam and Italy share deep cultural and historical similarities, particularly their struggles for independence, which form a strong foundation for further strengthening their Strategic Partnership and potentially upgrading bilateral relations in the near future.

To advance this objective, Chairman Mẫn proposed enhancing the role of legislative bodies in both countries and strengthening oversight of bilateral and multilateral cooperation agreements. He also highlighted the importance of expanding collaboration into emerging sectors where Italy holds expertise and Vietnam has growing demand, including science and technology, artificial intelligence, innovation, and high-quality human resource development.

President Mattarella warmly welcomed the high-level Vietnamese delegation, noting the significance of the visit as the first by a senior Vietnamese leader following the country’s 16th National Assembly election and the consolidation of its state institutions. Through Chairman Mẫn, he extended his congratulations to President Tô Lâm and expressed confidence that the visit would inject new momentum into bilateral relations.

The Italian President emphasized the importance of boosting bilateral trade, describing it as a key pillar with significant untapped potential. In addition to economic cooperation, he suggested expanding exchanges in fashion design, culture, tourism, and education.

Addressing regional and global developments amid an increasingly complex international landscape, President Mattarella stressed the need to uphold peace and strongly support multilateralism. Both sides agreed to enhance coordination and mutual support within international and regional organisations, particularly the United Nations.

The two leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law, reflecting a common vision for stability and cooperation on the global stage.
