Vietnamese PM Attends Climate Action Summit

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính on Wednesday evening attended a virtual Climate Action Summit hosted by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, representing Vietnam as a pioneering country in the implementation of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).
The high-level event brought together 16 heads of state and government, alongside leaders of major regional organisations such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the European Union, the African Union, the Alliance of Small Island States, and the Caribbean Community.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Chính warned that climate change has become a harsh and undeniable global reality, severely impacting nations and individuals alike. Despite this, climate actions remain insufficient to meet the targets outlined in the Paris Agreement, particularly in areas of climate finance and emission reductions.
To address the urgent challenges, the Vietnamese leader called for a transformative shift in global thinking and strategy—one that is inclusive, determined, and action-oriented. He urged nations to uphold multilateralism, promote fairness and justice, and mobilise concrete, practical cooperation to unlock resources for climate response and sustainable development.
Highlighting Vietnam’s national priorities, PM Chính emphasized that the country views climate response not only as an imperative but as a strategic choice and a driving force for growth. He stressed that the people must be placed at the heart of this transition to ensure rapid yet sustainable development, noting that environmental preservation should never be compromised for economic gain.
The Prime Minister shared that Vietnam is actively and comprehensively implementing climate strategies with clear roadmaps. The country is enhancing institutional and legal frameworks for green transition, including national energy master plans and sectoral development strategies. It is also rolling out initiatives to support vulnerable communities affected by climate impacts.
Despite being a developing nation with limited resources, Vietnam has emerged as a regional leader in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and as an active contributor to international green initiatives. The Prime Minister reiterated the country’s strong commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
“Vietnam is ready to participate, ready to cooperate, and ready to lead,” he said, affirming the country’s role as a reliable partner and responsible member of the international community in advancing sustainable development.
PM Chính concluded by appealing to international partners to provide greater financial support, technology sharing, and capacity-building assistance to ensure effective implementation of Vietnam’s climate goals, thereby contributing meaningfully to global efforts under the Paris Agreement.
