The premiere is scheduled to coincide with the IV World Conference on Creative Economy, held in Tashkent from October 2 to 4, 2024, promising to be a grand cultural highlight of the event.
“Tamerlano,” one of Handel’s most esteemed works, was composed in a mere 20 days in July 1724. This year marks its 300th anniversary, and the new production, initiated by the Fund for the Development of Culture and Arts of Uzbekistan, aims to present a fresh take on this classic opera. The story centers on the legendary conqueror Amir Timur, his romance with the daughter of his enemy, Ottoman Sultan Bayezid, and his journey towards becoming a just warrior and ruler.
Kirill Richter’s interpretation will incorporate Uzbek national instruments, adding a unique dimension to the performance that echoes the historical era of Amir Timur. The National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan, under the baton of Alibek Kabdurakhmanov, will provide the musical accompaniment.
Esteemed for his ability to seamlessly blend ancient imagery with contemporary art, Stefano Poda brings his renowned style to the production, overseeing set design, costumes, lighting, and choreography. Paolo Gianni Chei collaborates with Poda on dramaturgy, adding depth to the narrative with his emotionally charged approach.
The production features the Honored Choir of the Republic of Uzbekistan, led by Gulnara Malikova, the karnay-surnay group “Uzbegim” directed by Kamila Muminov, and the Orchestra of Folk Instruments under Abdulkharim Ashirmatov. Over 160 participants will be involved, ensuring a rich and dynamic performance.
The opera will be performed in Italian, with the leading role played by People’s Artist of Uzbekistan Zhenisbek Piyazov. Spanish tenor Juan Sancho, celebrated as one of the finest Handel interpreters of his generation, will portray the Turkish Sultan Bayezid, while Argentine soprano Veronika Kanhami will play Bayezid’s daughter Asteria.
“Tamerlano” promises to offer groundbreaking artistic and staging solutions for Uzbekistan, honoring tradition while embracing innovation. This production is expected to be a significant cultural event, drawing the attention of both local audiences and the international music community.
