China Firmly Opposes Assassination of Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: China has expressed strong opposition and condemnation of the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, voicing concerns that the incident may escalate regional turmoil. A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian, addressed the issue during a daily press briefing on Thursday.

When questioned about the implications of Haniyeh’s killing on Chinese peace efforts in the Middle East and the recently signed Beijing Declaration mediated by China, Lin emphasized the need to avoid further escalation. He called for a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible.

“China supports Palestine’s internal reconciliation and believes this is an important step toward solving the Palestinian question and realizing peace and stability in the Middle East,” Lin stated.

He praised the efforts of Palestinian factions on the Beijing Declaration and expressed hope for their reconciliation and the achievement of independent statehood at the earliest opportunity. Lin reiterated China’s commitment to working with relevant parties towards this goal.

“The more daunting the situation is in the Middle East, the more critical it is for the international community to try to cool down the situation and enable de-escalation,” Lin added.

China remains dedicated to maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East and opposes any external interference. “We stand ready to work with relevant parties to strive for lasting peace and security in the region,” Lin concluded.
