Iran Urges UN to Address Dire Humanitarian Situation in Syria, Condemns Israeli Aggression

New York, The Gulf Observer: Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has warned that the humanitarian situation in Syria remains “dire” and urged the international community to ensure full, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access to affected communities.

Addressing a United Nations Security Council session on Thursday, Iravani emphasized that illegal unilateral sanctions imposed on Syria exacerbate the humanitarian crisis, hinder reconstruction, and obstruct economic recovery. He reiterated that sanctions should never be used as tools of political coercion or interference in Syria’s internal affairs.

On the security situation, Iravani voiced concern over the persistent threat posed by terrorist groups such as Da’esh, Al-Qaida, and foreign terrorist fighters, stressing that their relocation from Syria to Afghanistan could destabilize the wider region.

Highlighting the fragile situation in Sweida, the Iranian envoy noted that although a ceasefire has brought temporary calm, clashes continue, leaving nearly 200,000 civilians displaced. He called for swift and impartial accountability for atrocities committed, including those against Alawite communities in Latakia and Tartous.

Iravani also expressed concern about ongoing clashes between the Syrian Democratic Forces and interim authorities in the northeast, urging greater political engagement to prevent further escalation.

Turning to Israel’s actions, the ambassador accused the Israeli regime of continued destabilizing attacks in Syria, which he said have caused civilian casualties, destroyed vital infrastructure, and violated Syria’s sovereignty. He demanded an end to Israel’s illegal occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights in line with international law and UN resolutions.

Concluding his remarks, Iravani reaffirmed that the only sustainable solution lies in a Syrian-led, Syrian-owned political process, facilitated by the UN and based on Security Council Resolution 2254, ensuring sovereignty, unity, and the legitimate rights of all Syrians.
