Electrica Unveils 1 GWh Battery Storage Initiative to Support Romania’s 2030 Energy Transition Goals

Electrica

Bucharest, The Gulf Observer: Romanian power supplier and distributor Electrica S.A. (BSE: EL) today announced the initiation of permitting procedures for 15 battery-energy-storage system (BESS) parks, with a total capacity of approximately 1 GWh, as part of its broader 2030 strategic transformation.

Key Highlights

  • The projects will be developed on lands already owned by Electrica, reducing the need for additional land acquisition.
  • Electrica emphasises that distributed deployment (across 15 sites) will boost operational resilience and support dynamic responses to fluctuations in national electricity consumption and renewable production.
  • Although financial details have not been disclosed, the initiative forms a strategic pillar in the company’s aim to transition into a leader of the energy-transition in Romania.
  • The storage initiative complements other corporate targets: by 2030, Electrica aims to install 1 GW of renewable production capacity and 900 MWh of storage capacity.

Context & Strategic Rationale
With increasing penetration of variable renewable energy sources in Romania, grid flexibility and storage capabilities are becoming critical for stability. The shift by Electrica underscores its acknowledgment of this reality and commitment to modernise its infrastructure. Analysts indicate that energy-storage deployment is one of the cornerstones of Romania’s broader transition plan.

“Developing this 1 GWh storage infrastructure is a strategic pillar in Electrica’s transformation into a leader of the energy transition,” said CEO Alexandru Chiriță in the statement.

Outlook
The permit-seeking phase marks the first step; subsequent development, construction and commissioning of the BESS sites will proceed in stages. While detailed timelines per site remain undisclosed, Electrica’s strategy signals a clear move into large-scale storage assets as foundational to its business model beyond traditional supply and distribution.
Observers will look for further updates on site locations, technology choices, partnering arrangements, and funding details.
