Russia Expresses Concern Over Escalating Afghanistan–Pakistan Clashes, Urges Political Dialogue

Russia

Moscow, The Gulf Observer: The Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed deep concern over the rapid escalation of armed clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan, calling on both sides to exercise restraint and return to dialogue.

In a statement issued on February 27, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, voiced alarm over what she described as an “unusual and swift intensification” of armed confrontation between the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Zakharova noted that the clashes have reportedly involved regular military units, combat aircraft and heavy weaponry. According to available information, the hostilities have resulted in casualties and injuries on both sides, including among civilians.

“We are concerned about the extraordinary and rapid escalation of armed confrontation between Afghanistan and Pakistan,” she said, adding that reports indicate the use of heavy arms and air assets in the fighting.

Russia called on what it described as its “friendly countries” — Afghanistan and Pakistan — to avoid further dangerous escalation and heightened tensions. Zakharova urged both parties to refrain from actions that could worsen the situation and instead return to a negotiating process aimed at resolving differences through political and diplomatic means.

The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of dialogue and de-escalation to prevent further loss of life and maintain regional stability.
